neck pain Online
FHP is frequently associated with Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, headaches, pinched nerves, and arthritis in the neck. Other muscles attempt to compensate until they too become compromised. This obviously is not in the head, and is why chiropractors and other manual therapists have a steady stream of patients who consult for this common problem. For example, the victim of a rear-end auto collision at only 5 miles per hour is diagnosed with whiplash due to poor alignment of his/her head to their neck which predisposed them to substantial injury. The development of FHP is attributed to occupational or repetitive postures requiring prolonged sitting, forward leaning, habitual slouching and as a result poor vision. The dominant hand or leg may become very strong, while the non-dominant side weakens, creating widespread strength and flexibility imbalances. Place your hands in the small of your back and gently bend backward. Very few of us will get through life without experiencing back pain. FHP may also be implicated in carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist. You can check for some asymmetries in your body by looking in a mirror. Consulting with a more holistic health care practitioner should help figure out what other potential causes might be lurking around. Cheese, chocolate, refined carbohydrates, Chinese food, coffee and food additives; such as nitrates and aspartame are implicated for others. Other telltale signs are either a postural mal-alignment; such as, forward head posture, or restricted joint mobility in the cervical vertebrae. We are bombarded with the pharmaceutical industry's tablets for headache symptoms, and as you may know, this is big business for them, to the tune of billions of dollars. A poor sitting position causes the entire back and pelvis to round out, as well as the head to come forward in a typical "slump" position. However, when posture is less than optimal, imbalances cause increased stress to the muscles, bones and connective tissue which affects the whole kinetic chain. When our major joints are stacked appropriately, the human body can be maintained upright with little muscular effort, little stress to ligaments, and equally distributed compressive forces. It is unfortunate that we only tend to recognize that we have a problem when our body's are "screaming" at us. The good news is that correction of postural alignment has been shown to relieve pain and restore function, such as range of motion and strength. Over time, and individual with FHP loses the ability to position the head correctly on the cervical spine. People who perform the same activity over and over again in the same position are overusing some muscles and underutilized others. You can improve your posture through simple stretching exercises or reorganizing your workspace. They are all a warning that something is not right. Several research studies over the past 20 years indicate that about 40 to 50 percent of headaches originate somewhere in the upper back or neck. Meaning that our choices in either what we eat or what we do are able to offer us help. If you like to sleep on your back, a pillow under your knees will help relieve much of the strain. Solution, limit computer time and/or get more active. Hold this stretch for one to two seconds. There is no such thing as having a normal number of headaches. Our joints are linked together in such a way that the position of one joint affects the position of all the others. Try the lifestyle approach, taking things one step at a time, and see
back pain History
Chiropractic is a health care approach and profession that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the hypothesis that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system. It is generally considered to be complementary and alternative medicine, a characterization that many chiropractors reject. The main treatment involves manual therapy including manipulation of the spine, other joints, and soft tissue; treatment also includes exercises and health and lifestyle counseling. Traditionally, chiropractic assumes that a vertebral subluxation or spinal joint dysfunction interferes with the body's function and its innate intelligence, a notion that brings ridicule from mainstream science and medicine.
D.D. Palmer founded chiropractic in the 1890s and his son B.J. Palmer helped to expand it in the early 20th century. It has two main groups: "straights", now the minority, emphasize vitalism, innate intelligence and spinal adjustments, and consider subluxations to be the leading cause of all disease; "mixers" are more open to mainstream and alternative medical techniques such as exercise, massage, nutritional supplements, and acupuncture. Chiropractic is well established in the U.S., Canada and Australia.
For most of its existence, chiropractic has battled with mainstream medicine, sustained by ideas such as subluxation that are not based on solid science. Vaccination remains controversial among chiropractors. The American Medical Association called chiropractic an "unscientific cult" and boycotted it until losing a 1987 antitrust case. Chiropractic has had a strong political base and sustained demand for services; in recent decades, it has gained more legitimacy and greater acceptance among medical physicians and health plans, and evidence-based medicine has been used to review research studies and generate practice guidelines. Many studies of treatments used by chiropractors have been conducted, with conflicting results. Collectively, systematic reviews of this research have not demonstrated that spinal manipulation is effective, with the possible exception of treatment of back pain. The efficacy and cost-effectiveness of maintenance chiropractic care are unknown. Although spinal manipulation can have serious complications in rare cases, chiropractic care is generally safe when employed skillfully and appropriately.
